Project objectives
The original object of the project is to solve problems arising in the field of EU transnational transportation by providing adequate understanding of the legal setting, not just at a single national level, but also at EU and multinational/comparative level, by developing and implementing state of the art education and by working with innovative tools: a Legal Navigation App. SENSE clarifies the legal aspects of transnational transport from multiple perspectives and educates (future) professionals. Combining state of the art knowledge, students, lecturers and professionals are enabled to enter into a dialogue on actual topics from different national perspectives. This cooperation will enlarge staff mobility and bridge the world of education with the world of non-educational stakeholders. Jointly, the partner law schools will develop an international programme, containing different modules about ‘transnational employment within the transport sector in the EU’. This project aspires to make SENSE in transitional transport in the EU. SENSE aimed to make transport more Social, rules better ENforceable, the sector of international transport more Sustainable and because of the Legal Navigation App all of this will be made Easy.
These objectives have been met. We have provided an adequate understanding of the legal setting on EU level throughout our online (open access) course: cross-border road transport in EU law context on Coursera (https://www.coursera.org/learn/transport-eu-law/). In addition, a hard copy text book of the learning materials was published.
On a national level, the participating universities each drafted a national memorandum addressing an introduction to the national law, the implementation of EU law, the national framework on transnational transport, monitoring and enforcement, literature on the topic and case law. Following this national memoranda, students from the participating universities – a selection of top notch students who all completed the course on Coursera – drafted national position papers, in which they addressed the problems arising in the field of EU transnational transportation from their national perspectives. They commented on each other’s position papers prior to and during the mid conference in Luxembourg. At the mid conference, the students and teachers shared their knowledge and ideas to come up with best practice solutions. This resulted in a paper that is published in the international journal European Employment Law Cases (EELC).
Finally, the objective of introducing an innovative tool to make the legal context of the EU transnational transport sector more easy and accessible was met with the introduction of the Legal Navigation App. This App, which was tested by truck drivers, is currently running as a beta version.
